Hi there, new to the forum and new to the boating world. I just finished my boaters safety course and I'm now in pursuit of my first boat. My price range is 10k. I happened to stumble across a family member on my wife's side that is selling their boat, a 2001 Monterey Boat 190 LS MONTURA BR (160 hours) and in great condition. Comes with a trailer. They are asking 9200.

Knowing how much the boat was used and what condition it is in I'm really interested in purchasing it. I think it would be a great first boat that would hopefully last a while.

I wanted to reach out and see what others had to say about Monterey boats. Also if you think the asking price is fair (it is under NADA value). Also, being a noob at this, what things should I be considering that a rookie may overlook.

Look forward to hearing from you.

$9200 sounds high for an 11 year old 19 footer. You could probably into a 2012 184FS for around $25,000.

My Monterey is a foot shorter and a year older... I got it for several thousand less than what you are looking at. I have an Edge 180. NADA means nada with boats. It's not like cars where you get a good feel for value. Boat prices have more to do with your market than anything else. I'd look for similar boats on trader forums, craigslist, ebay, local marinas, etc to get an idea for value. Good news is that it sounds like you know the history of this boat which provides some peace of mind.

Thanks. It does help to hear from others. Looks like there will be some negotiating. What would be a fair starting point from my end? 8k?

Well where exactly are you located? Which engine is in the Monterey? How is the condition? Can you post some Pics? Was it stored outside or inside? Does it have records? That particular Monterey is a nice boat and was ahead of its time. I seem to recall that it even has a fresh water spigot built into the swim platform. Does it have snap-out carpet? I've seen that exact boat underpowered with the base engine more than I've seen it with the optional power.

Not sure where you are, but that boat in absolute base form is valued at over $10k in the Central Florida area. If it has the optional V6 engine, bimini, mooring covers, etc etc, then the value goes up.

Monterey makes a very nice boat. Monterey is based near Gainesville FL, and was formed by a family member of the Chaparral company. I looked for a long time at many boats and settled on my 08 214FS(which is now called the 224FS), and have never been happier with a boat. I have owned many.

If you can get a better price, go for it, but it sounds like an ok price as long as it is in the condition you mention.

Good to hear! I don't know a lot about Monterey boats except that they are a relatively new company that has grown steadily.

The boat I'm looking at has a bimini top, trailer, Mercury Alpha 1 outdrive - 135 hp, carpet. We are located in the northeast.

I think NADA includes the trailer, but the bimini adds some to the price. The Alpha and the 135 are standard. I would guess its up around $11k value here in Florida. Maybe less where you are. I have not seen one of these things sell for less than NADA, so at that price it sounds like a deal. Obviously, being on the internet, we cant see what you see, or touch and evaluate the boat in person. Like I said, I love mine.
