Hello - im new here- long time listener- 1st time caller-
Looking for some tips here- Heres the gig-
I recently bought a boat, motor, trailer package- basically for the power plant that I hope to use on another project.
Boat is a 2001 Nitro 188- and it has the Merc xr6 150 hp 2 stroke.
Now- the thing is- its basically new- the original owner I bought it from - purchased it brand new from Bass Pro Shops in Missouri- late 2001. Her and her Husband took the kids out one day-yes - just one time- for about 4 hours........
That's it...
She found out she was scared of the water- and he couldn't figure out how to back up the trailer- let alone- he didn't want the thing to begin with . It was all her big idea to go out and become boat people.
Nothing against Ukranians- but did I mention they were Ukranian? - NO difference to me - she was a nice lady....
Anyhowz- the boat went home and lived in thier garage until 2012 when the divorce went down and she moved out here to Seattle with the kids- and the boat.... with good intentions that maybe the kids could use it out here. Nope- Been paying for storage ever since- and they just wanted out.
Now here lies my concern (s)
The thing has been sitting a looooong time- never started since that one late fall day back in 2001...
I own it now- and do not want to screw anything up. I know I just cant go hit the key and go fishing...
I would appreciate some of your vast knowledge of the do's and dont's with this thing- other than the fairly obvious to me-
new lower unit oil- new impeller- drain tank- (which I did already- and it looked to be the original tank of fuel- appeared to be mixed fuel in the main tank- which should have been the break in gas?)
Problem is- I don't know if it is even all the way ( or properly for that matter) broken in...
Any advice you all can help me with would be greatly appreciated.
Im rackin my brain here thinking about this thing. Basically a brand new engine- Not a mark on it- like literally- and there is the power plant for my outboard conversion im workin on...
Sooo... what should the first thing I should do be? then the second... third... etc...Help!
This is a great forum- and thanks in advance for any help-
Marty

I would love to add some photos- but it wont let me...
I have emptied the main tank- and all the hoses appear soft and rubbery- like new- all electrical connections and wiring is like showroom...

Today I removed the carb cover to unveil a set of 3 bright shiny like new carbs with no gunk in them or on them... also- looked at all the plugs- barely anything on em- look great- plug wires nice and soft/pliable-
As I mentioned before- the mixed fuel in the tank was most likely the only gas ever in the boat- and if they only went out for a few hours- im not sure it has even been thru the break in process- at least correctly... which is a little worrysome in itself-
I am trying really hard not to jinx this motor- and am hoping for good fire and compression-
Just need to know the right steps to take before I turn it over...
Pretty sure impellor first. New lower unit oil...then Pressure check lower unit. Then reassemble- and hook up to 6 gallon gas can of mixed fuel for initial fire up? Go thru break in protocol??
Do I need to fog or oil the cylinders to lube them before I crank motor? If so- with what? Recommendations?
(I will clean main plastic boat tank later- I have a couple of merc 6 gallon tanks...)
(Please keep in mind- I do not want the boat or trailer- Just want the motor if everything checks out right- )

I would guess that you are going to leave the motor on the boat until you can verify that the motor runs. You might try running straight sea foam into it to see if it starts up. I'd have to wonder a bit about the oil pump to make sure that its pumping oil in there. you don't want to start it up until you can make sure its pumping oil.
