Hello,

I have a 2001 Mercury 9.9hp 2-stroke outboard. It's a great engine. I want to replace the old spark plugs that have been in since we got it brand new, they are NGK BP8HS-15. Now, I have these Champion spark plugs QL77JC4 that my grandfather says will work in the motor, I have a whole pack of them and would like to use them if possible instead of buying new NGK's. I have not been able to find a equivalency or any information regarding putting those plugs into that motor. When lined up they are almost identical. I have looked up the specs for both and have them listed below.

Champion 828M QL77JC4 Nickel Spark Plug

NGK 6729 BP8HS-15 Nickel Spark Plug

I know that NGK and Champion measure their heat ranges opposite to eachother, just to make it easy for us. SO with that in mind they should be relatively similar?

Any advice on this would be much appreciated as I would like to get the motor out fishing shortly.

Re: 2001 Mercury 9.9hp 2-stroke Spark plugs

I went through this a couple years ago on a 2001 Merc. 9.9 4 stroke. Went to local marine supply store and bought new NGK's. They were the wrong ones, didn't fit. Went back and got Champions, didn't fit. Went to a different local Merc shop and ordered NGK's, didn't fit. Nobody could find the same numbers on the plugs that came out from the factory. Finally had to talk to a Merc rep to get the correct ones. New NGK's but dont have the numbers with me.... Look at what the shop/service manual says to replace them with. The plugs that came from the factory were for break in only.... sounds stupid but that was the explanation I got.

Looking the same doesn't mean much, and according to the Champion website they don't have a plug for this motor, so spend a couple bucks and get the right ones.

I have the same motor, I changed the plugs when I bought it 5 years ago, they're still fine.
