2001 Merc Optimax fault sensor limp home throttle

I have twin 2001 Merc 225 Opti's. Starboard motor giving "Fault Sensor", "Limp home Throttle" message on smart gauge display. Any clue as to what might be causing this? Thanks.

This message could be any one or combinations of several sensor failures. Based on limp mode, I would guess maybe the TPS has gone south. TPS failures are fairly common on the Opti's of this vintage. What you really need is to get a Merc dealer to plug in the DDT or CDS. It will tell them exactly which sensor failed. Good luck.
