Hello to all! I?m relatively new here and was looking for some expert advice.
I?m currently looking at repowering my fishing boat which has a 99? Johnson 40hp 2 stroke tiller and looking at buying a used ?01 Mecr 60hp 4 stroke. My boat is currently underpowered and it?s rated for 60hp so this is a good match.
Couple questions, what is the reliability for this vintage class motor? I was assuming it was EFI but it is not and is still old tech and is carbureted. Are there any major issues people know of on these 4 strokes in this age class?
Previous owner did mention that it never has had a problem for life of the engine until last fall, he noticed some oil leaking on the engine head. $850 later he had all the upper end engine seals replaced. Since then it?s been on a week-long fishing trip and said it runs fine and the oil leak is gone. This something I should be of concern or stay away from this purchase? Any other concerns or issues I should look at or be of concern?
As for the used motor inspection, I was just going look it over myself instead of taking it to a dealer. Going to take it for a live test run on his boat. Take it back to my garage and check the compression, check prop spindle straightness and check lower unit oil before making my proceed with the purchase decision. Any other items you guys would check for on used tiller motor?
I personally have not seen the motor yet but plan on doing an inspection/overview this weekend to see if it?s worth pursuing. The price is right and it?s priced to sell.
Thanks!
