Did you ever solve the issue? My 2001 Merc 125 2+2 is behaving exactly the same. Excellent under 2K revs and over 3k, with good top speed. Just nothing at mid range. After having all carbs re-built and synced by Mechanic, he has advised that it is just they way the motor runs and I need to live with it. Should pumping the accelerator piston have any affect when the motor is running? as mine has no affect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me crazy!

They certainly have a behaviour to them. Could be normal.
But the mention of the carbs having been off and on…makes me wonder if the correct carbs have been put back in the correct locations. There is a difference between them, being the 2+2. Someone with more savvy on the subject can explain or perhaps even confirm if doing such a thing would see the engine run at all. Just know they are different between or amongst. Half have a port or fitting blanked off or perhaps not even there, compared to the other half. Something like that.
