2001 Johnson Ocean Pro 225 engine ran hot now won't start

The boat hit a shoal and churned up a lot of mud. The engine hot warning came on and the engine shut down and now I cannot get it to restart. It will attempt to fire, the starter disengages but won't keep running. Any suggestions?

Ok, Ill check the compression. Another thing is one of the thermostats was not in the hole when the cowl was removed. Hit it with the cowl maybe? Melted something?
