I'm looking at buying a boat with a 2001 Yamaha 200 HPDI. The price seems good for $3800. The problem is the motor won't start on gas. I did a compression test with the motor cold and all cylinders were 95-100 psi except the bottom right cylinder was 85 psi. Outside temp was around 85 degrees. We ran the motor on starter fluid for 10 seconds and then tested the bottom right cylinder and it came up to 95 psi. Then tested the cylinder above it and it was 105. The motor acts like it wants to start. The price is good but I'm worried I could sink a lot of money in the motor. My feeliing is it is filter or pump related. What is your opinion on the compression test and health of the motor? Should I stay away from this motor? Thanks!

I would stay away from a motor that does not start and run if you are not a good mechanic, especially if one cylinder is low

RUN AWAY RUN AWAY.
Ill sell you a junk 200 HPDI for 1000 and save you some money.
could be a medium pressure pump, about 800 dollars on the counter, could be an injector driver, about 1100 on the counter.
could be stopped up injectors,50 bucks a pop if they are servicable.
and if you can get them out without removing the cyl head.
simply stay away from that engine.
most techs cant work on them and parts are expensive.
when maintained and running well they work.
when neglected and not maintained they tended to blow pistons and cost a lot of money.

Rodbolt,
Thanks for your opinion. What should the compression be and do you feel this motor has a bad cylinder?

Re: 2001 HPDI Compression

compression should be within 10 PSI on all 6.
they ran very well,90% died a slow death from lack of maint, just like the one you are looking at.
no maint=sudden death.
would you buy a car knowing it would only run on ether?
same thing here only parts are a lot more expensive and way fewer techs understand them, much less can fix them.
