2001 Evinrude 15 hp electric problem

Have a friend who is selling his 01 4 stroke 15 hp. He said it quit running and he thinks it is a power pack or stator. Ran fine until then. Don't know much about 4 strokes but he is selling at a good price. How hard is it to replace a stator and such. I have replaced power pack and coils on my 2 stroke but that's it. Thanks guys

There are lots of things to check on a non-running motor before jumping into a stator (rarely the problem) or power pack. Lack of fuel, wiring issues, and lack of spark need to be investigated, problem isolated, THEN the appropriate part(s) replaced. Shotgunning is never a very economical way to fix an engine.

suggest you get a model no. then check the price of the electrical components...they can be eye openers compared to the 2 stroke models, in fact, some are nla and you have to really search to find an equivalent or old stock new one

Friend has it at the shop and he is having it diagnosed to find the problem. He is getting a new motor and he is selling this one but, will not sell until he finds out the issue. The shop told him they think it's a stator or power pack. When they get to checking it out 100% for him I will know. Just wondering what is involved in changing the stator if that's it.

Changing out the electrical parts is relatively easy.

I'd stay away from it. A lot of those older 4 stroke parts are NLA or if they are the price will kill ya.

I pulled the coil and it looks like a bomb went off in it. What would cause this to happen? Would another component cause this to fail?
