Hi I'm thinking about buying a 2001 bayliner 1950 capri classic with a 3.0 mercruiser and I don't know much about I/O engines so here are a few questions,is this a fairly popular dependable engine, and will it have plenty of power to pull a wakeboard, and roughly how fast might it go with two adults.....Any help would be much appreciated..Thanks

Re: 2001 bayliner question

:welcome: Brian. Yes the 3.0 is reliable assuming that it has been cared for. It generate 135 hp so yes it would have power for a wake boarder as the 1950 capri is a pretty light boat. As far as speed goes it varies with weight, sea conditions, propeller and bottom of boat condition etc. but you should see 30-35mph anyway. Before you buy a 13 year old Bayliner though you should have a Professional Marine Surveyor go over the boat and motor for you from top to bottom so you know what you're buying. There can be many hidden problems and for $200-$300 it's pretty cheap money to spend up front. If you care to share some pictures and info on boats you are looking at we can tell you if there is anything obvious to us that you should stay away from before it even gets to the surveyor. Below are a couple of articles that might help you out.

That will be boarderline for power in my opinion. It could probably do it but might take longer than most people like to get them up. In a boat like that I would look for a 4.3l or bigger.

Re: 2001 bayliner question

I have a 2003 bayliner 175 with a 3.0L Alpha 1. Not sure how the weight compares to yours but I can pull a full size wakeboarder (200lbs) out of the water very well with 2 more adults in the boat. If I load up further with 2 more adults or 3 kids then I start to notice it bog down.

I have also pulled a 3 man tube with 3 buddies on board (probably 600lbs) without much trouble, bogs a little at first but goes like stink once on plane.

Re: 2001 bayliner question

The 1950 is a pretty light boat (almost bought one went with a 2150 instead) and the 3.0 is decent - not great but very workable. Get 5-6 people in would probably dog down a bit but normal 2-3 people and some gear it will be fine.

Welcome to the forum and as stated post pics and links and you will get LOTS of input. You may get some Bayliner haters but I've owned three and all did what they were supposed to - when looking at older boats it about how they are taken care of. A top of the line boat not taken cared of is way worse than a well taken care of lower end boat aka Bayliner.
