Whether an engine is reliable or not depends on how it was cared for. Ignored by the current owner means it may break down tomorrow. You don't know the condition unless you have it checked by a reputable shop or if you are capable -- yourself. As a minimum an on water test is required with a 20 - 30 minute wide open throttle run. Check the oil for water and then smell it for evidence of fuel contamination. If the oil shows "over full" but not milky, it probably smells of fuel and therefore is "making oil". Two reasons for that are over propped and running too cool.
