Sadly, I am rebuilding my 2001 200HP Mercury engine (No EFI). This is after restoring my newly purchased Checkmate Starflite and using it on the lake for one solid day and a half *such is life*

Background...
Oil line issues resulted in no oil to engine.
Reserve tank sucked dry.
No alarm. Former owner may have screwed with it. And as we know, nothing good happens to an engine run without oil. (It quit)
The engine did run nearly normal to the unknowing ear afterwards.
Did not seize, and wasn't a complete mess.
However, it's time to rebuild the Powerhead!

Compression test revealed; 1 cylinder bad. The other 5 tested perfect. (bad cylinder is lower left hand cylinder when looking at the engine from rear)

I will be attacking this myself. Aside from the obvious powerhead boring and that sort..

Questions:
I have the assembled engine block on my work bench. I have not opened it up yet.

Looking for your thoughts.
1) Aside from the one bad cylinder - should I replace all the rings. * I expect so
2) If I need boring in the bad cylinder, should all the cylinders be bored as well and all the rings changed to match.
3) In my situation and with this engine should I get the one cylinder sleeved.
4) This will be my first rebuild. Any insight at all would be greatly appreciated. Sending to a shop or getting a new powerhead is not an option.
5) What should I expect to have the most trouble with? What other concerns should I have about the internal workings of my engine?

Is it at all possible that may just need to get the one cylinder honed? The test showed 60pds of pressure in the bad cylinder, and about 125 in all the others. The engine wasn't run without oil after it originally quit.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time. Greg M (VT911)
goodsir1976@aol.com
