2001 2 stroke 115 clean carbs, good fuel, good compression, trouble starting

Last week dumped the fuel and put new fuel in tank. I cleaned the carbs, they looked very clean after taking them off but still cleaned them. Choke works manual and electric. Tested the compression - all cylinders within 1 psi of another. New spark plugs. Happened last year also at the end of season. Will not start unless I give it a small kick of engine starter. Once it starts, runs well, idles well. Once it quits running for a 8-15 minutes same problems. Any advice appreciated.

what were the compression #s?
Did you test spark with spark tester to make sure it will jump a 7/16" gap?
if not turning over fast enough it may be the problem.

Choke linkage may need to be adjusted so that it closes all of the way

thanks Captain, I believe it was right at 125-128 on the cylinders. I am going to recheck this. After putting the carbs on I did notice the plate close all the way. I will check the gaps on the spark plugs. They did come pre-gapped and I compared them visually but did not have a gap tester with me. Will post specs when done.

I was not talking about plug gap, I asked if you tested your spark to see if it would jump a 7/16" gap

ok did the 7/16 spark tester and all were good had to video them because it was a one man job
compressions again with another gauge because the other was not registering at 0
top left 120 top right 115
bottom left 115 bottom right 115

I do notice that 40% of the time when I start the starter whines and does not fully engage the flywheel.

Thanks for any help - Paul

Paul, go to the parts store and buy you a good spark tester. They are not expensive and just simply slip on one of the plugs. You can easily see the spark from the controls position and you don't need to video them or have someone else with you . Jeff

Check your battery and connections. I think 99Yam may be right about it not turning over fast enough.
