2000 Yamaha waverunner won't start!

I got my 2000 Waverunner XL1200 out for the season and when I tried to start it the battery tried to fire. Realized the battery was dead so bought a new one, charged it - put it in and now it won't even try to start. When I push the green start button the light comes on the engine so I know the battery is hot. Also we've checked the battery and it is strong (brand new). Any suggestions before I spend a bunch of money taking it into a repair shop????
