it is an emergency fuel enrichening function in case your choke stops working and you have trouble starting your motor on a cold morning or you have a dead battery. It explains the operation in your owners book if you have one. I've had my motor over 10 years and have never had to use that red knob.

What is the stock setting? Also, what pitch prop came stock on this motor? The guy I bought it from put a 14p stainless "rapture" prop on it. Seems like a little too much prop. Thanks for the help!

I'd check back with the Yamaha boat/motor dealer to find out what is standard issue for your motor, but at the end of the day you should be looking for a WOT full speed operation in the 5000 to 5500 RPM range. Depending on where you boat and your budget, you can decide on stainless steel, aluminum or other. They have relatively inexpensive composite and plastic props now.
