2000 Volvo Penta Sterndrive

At the end of February the lower unit gearcase cracked in a horseshoe shape around the bottom, all oil leaked out. I had it winterized and after discussion with the individual that did the winterization his explanation was as follows. He said after looking at it the bearing race had broke in half probably from an impact of some kind and this caused the outer casing to crack. There was no gear damage however. To my knowledge I've never had an impact. Any thoughts as to how this happened?

did you leave the drive tilted up? i have seen a gearbox that filled the exhaust section through the prop freeze and crack.
