Anyone out there have any ideas on how to remove/install a gimble bearing. I believe I can remove it with a GM axle bearing slide hammer puller once I get to work.....but I am searching for ideas/input on installing the new one. I can't find VP tools online. Are they the same as Mercruiser? I welcome any help here as I am ordering the parts asap and need to get this fixed!!! It looks like I would need about a 3 1/2" socket to drive it in if I had to go the socket way for an installer.....

Slide hammer will remove it, and the Mercruiser tools including the alignment bar will get it installed and centered. They are not Volvo specific in this case.
Be sure to check the alignment, unless you want to have problems installing the drive, or wanting to pull the engine to replace a dead coupler.
You can download a service manual for your drive at the link below.

Thanks Don..... I have the Merc alignment tool and it slides in and out fine so everything is ok now (with current bearing). After the new bearing is installed, doesn't it have to be ok? How could it not be ok? If it is not ok, what do you do....jerk around on the alignment tool till it is? If the eng alignment is ok now, it can't change, right?? I have heard of people having trouble after installing new bearings and never understood it.

Are the bearings the same as a Merc? If so, which model..alpha one, gen 2? bravo? Should I get a VP bearing from the local dealer? I need upper bellows as well. Water got it. I looked at this site for these parts and it said local dealer only.... that suprised me with something as common as a bearing and bellows.
Thanks,
Scott

The gimbal bearing is two pieces ---- the bearing and the carrier.
The bearing can tip or **** in the carrier.
Using the alingment tool after a gimbal bearing replacement to center/aling it is MUCH easier than using the shaft of your drive.
It is also common practice the hit the alingment bar after it is all the way in on four sides of the handle with your hand or a small deadblow hammer.
Good Luck Muc
