My motor idles rough and runs erratic at slow rpm.
A mechanic told me that since the motor had set up for 6 months, I need to clean the "air speed jets". That this was a characteristic of the 60 degree V4's.
I can't find any reference to these jets in my manual.
Where the heck are they, and how would I clean them?
Thank you

Since there is no fuel that passs thru the actual air bleed jets I doubt seriously if they are varnished up. However, if the motor has been sitting for 6 months I would strongly suggest cleaning the carbs completely.

Air jets are the fixed jets that are visable / accessable on the front of the carbs. You should have an adjustable idle needle and a fixed mid range air bleed if I remember correctly on that carb'd model.

Just so you know, when someone suggests you clean the carbs they do not mean spray cleaning through them. They mean remove them from the engine, disassemble them, give them a good soak in carb cleaner, blow out all passages with compressed air and reassemble with new kits. Spraying cleaner into the bores does a good job of cleaning the bores. Unfortunately the cleaner doesn't get anywhere near the parts that are clogged.

I have considered taking off the carbs, but there is so much crap to un-hook on this engine, I am trying to use that as a last resort.
I thought of buying some of that OMC carb cleaner and pumping it into the carbs and letting it sit overnight, then draining it out.
Could that help?
Wish I had never sold my old 1983 115hp, at least I knew how to work on that engine.

It's not near as complicated as it looks. I'd suggest giving it a go. Consider the alternative -- if a single carb has clogged passages it very possible you'll damage a piston. Remember, on an OMC if the cylinder isn't getting gas, it isn't getting oil.

But don't worry. Rebuilding the motor isn't as complicates as it looks either.

Outboard motors are confusing

Outboard motors are confusing

I've rebuilt lawnmowers, motorcycles, and car engines before. However, outboards have always been a bugga-bo for me. It's all the peripheral stuff that has always confused me.
I wish I could find a good (bare-bones) outboard repair and rebuild manual that a person with some mechanical ability, like me, could follow easily.
Any suggestions?

I've always found the OE service manuals to be the best. They are very model specific which some aftermarket manuals are not.
