I have a 2001 5 hp Nissan that I had out yesterday and it's a great little engine. I like that the engine turns 180 degrees. Makes the boat very maneuverable and it's fun to make the boat spin inside its own length. Mine has the integral tank and just got a new tank because some gorilla overtightened the cap and tore the threads off the tank.
These motors were good enough that ( like their 3.5 hp little cousins) Tohastu made them for Mercury, Nissan and Mariner. ( Same basic motor, different paint). I've owned 4-5 of them over the years and still keep one . ( All 98' or lower though) IMHO, nothing (even today) beats them for power to weight ratio. 44#, F_N_R gear shift, internal tank option, easy starting and 2 stroke reliability. LOTS of torque too, ( My 5 hp Tohatsu 2 stroke, pushes my 14' pond skiff to the same 16 mph as my 2015 Tohatsu 6 hp 3 stroke) . BTW, Mine is never going to be for sale! p.s. If there is a down side to these motors it is that their little one lung power heads can idle a little rough.
I took a dremel and took off all the rough edges I could get to in the manifold and intake port, she runs much smoother now. That little motor pushes my old 17' Grumman transom canoe up on plane. I'll never sell either one. These motors were good enough that ( like their 3.5 hp little cousins) Tohastu made them for Mercury, Nissan and Mariner. ( Same basic motor, different paint).
