Does anybody happen to know the ignition timing advance settings for this motor? It runs fine but recentley started backfiring occasionally. Only at idle. Figured we'd at least check. This info has proven hard to find on the net, it, and any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sarasota, FL

It should be 36° before TDC. Idle around 8° BTDC.

It must be checked on the water, in gear and at full throttle.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and welcome to Iboats... (how do you pronounce that??) :)

Thank you very much, kind sir. I'm not the type to bother people, but I couldn't find this spec anywhere. Thank you for your time.
Maybe you can find another moment for someone who forgot to ask what each tick on the flywheel represents? 1 degree, I'm assuming?
It's usually pronounced exerkayerwhatever.

Thanks again!

No trouble at all!

I belive each tick is 2°, the long ones being 10° apart. The timing mark should be just beneath the flywheel just to the left of the filter/seperator (if I remember right). To be sure measure it.
I belive the information is out there - some of the late model service manuals 'escaped'. Look around biggerhammer.net - I saw them last there. They used to be in google's cache, but I think they're gone now. The web archive has bits of them too.

Good luck!

Re: 2000 mercury 8hp ob

Why can't things be simple? I mean compared to me. I'm a nice enough guy, I watch out for kids and my neighbors. I'll take care of a stray. Why can't I check my timing? I'm having a hard time 'cipherin the tick marks on the flywheel. FW spins CW. Marks are on the edge of FW. All marks are the same size (height) and pass by as follows: starting from the extreme left (before) end of the scale and reading to the right (after) end of the scale, the 1st mark is 3 dots stacked vertically, followed by 15 marks, then 2 small circles stacked vertically, followed by 12 marks.

slapped a light on it (in gear[trash can]WOT and low end recheck with a full load this weekend) and it was on the second mark to the left of the 2 small circles. It did backfire for me couple of times again. Does this ring any bells? If they are 2 degree increments, then I have no 36. ( we *guessed* that TDC was the 2 small circles using a piece of cabletie, nothing else was really close.) could they be 4 degrees, in which case I'm good, timing-wise and back to square one?
