I'm trying to replace the water pump on my 2000 Mercury 50hp 4-stroke and I can't get the gear case to drop. The 4bolts and the 1 nut have been removed. It appears the shift shaft is stopping it from dropping. From the schematics I've seen on-line it appears the shift shaft is a one-piece design and that I need (somehow) to remove the shat from the shift linkage up in the powerhead... Is this correct? Does anyone have any instructions, pictures, videos or advice on replacing the water pump on a 2000 50hp 4-stroke???

Thx

Hi there, Do you have your engine serial number? Having this number should help find the correct procedure as the procedure has changed somewhere within your year model time frame.

If it is a 2000 four stroke the service manual you require is P/N 90-828631R3. If you send me a PM with your email address, I will send you the manual.

Thx for the quick response. I ended up getting a subscription to an online manual and it ended up being very simple. Just a tab at the linkage up by the powerhead! Sad part is I discovered my prop shaft has a very slight bend in it... I'll take it to the machine shop to get straightened. It's not bad, but I'm paranoid and don't want to chance taking out the seals and/or a bearing. Again, thx for the response.
