I just purchased a 29' Proline walk with two (2) 2000 Mercury 225HP saltwater series motors. I have gone througt the breakin process (fist 30 gallons) and have about a total of 5hrs on the engines. When I start the engines sometimes they back fire and tend to run a little rough. However they do not over heat. Is this a problem (back fire) or is it normal for Merc engines or is it because the motor are still new?

The dealer indicated that backfire is common for Mercs.

Any info on Merc engin will be helpfull.

Thanks!! (Merry Christmas to all!)

abreug2,

I assume these engines are not of the Optimax variety? If they are, I would be a little concerned.

If not, a "sneeze" in a high displacement two stroke is not unusual, especially when cold. They're to "fresh" to be fooling with just yet. Run them until their first check up is due and see how they go.

The new big engines I've owned didn't smooth out until around 30 hours or so.

During the break in period, make sure you change rpm's often. Don't be afraid to goose em and back off quick. This helps seat the rings.
