We took the boat out today for a run up the river and a bit of tubing. Never really had it opened up...never over about 25mph. When I shut it down to pull the tube in, it dieseled pretty bad. The temp was normal so I dunno what's causing this.

I see some posts about adjusting the air/fuel and/or the throttle linkage. Should I start there? Could it just be bad plugs?

Thanks!

Tom

What is the engine idling at ? Should be around 650. If it is in that area, leave the throtle linkage alone. Do you have fresh gas in the boat and when was the last time the water fuel separator was changed?

Also check your timing.

There is a special procedure for doing this...
It's outlined in the service manual...

Don't try to set it without the correct procedure.

I think it's idleing around 900-1000.

As for the gas...the boat had about5 gallons in it when I purchased it. It has a 22gal tank. I filled it up the 1st time out and each time I take it out I top it off.

I have no clue when the water sep. was changed last.

Tom

Tom,... Your Idle is Too High..... Get it down to 650/700rpms, in gear.......

Also,..... Click on the Big Red Seach Button at the top of This Page,+ Search "Dieseling", or "Run On",.......
Much has been written on this subject.......... ;)

What they've mentioned already definitely affects dieseling problems. You can also try letting it just idle for a minute or two before shutting off, higher octane gas, and running your blower for a bit before killing the engine.

With it ideling at 900 to a 1000, you could idle it all day and it would still diesel when it was shut off.

I have a 1996 3.0 in a Bayliner and had the same problem. I checked the timing and idle RPM. Both were off. I just got back from a ski trip today and it shut off every time. Be sure and do it the way the book says.
