2000 Merc 250 hp efi throttle stuck

A friend had his throttle get stuck open on a recent outting and had to be towed in. Upon inspection it turned out the cause was grit/gunk in the throttle body parts. He cleaned it with WD40 and he said it seems fine. Is this something that needs to be cleaned periodically ? The motor only had about 30hrs.
