I have one of these 3 seaters. I noticed it was taking on water this summer. While on the trailer, I put water in it with the hose from the inside. It leaked out the impeller shaft and dripped on the driveway. What kind of seal is in there? What all is involved it pulling it apart and replacing it? Is it in the bearing that I assume is a sealed bearing?? Thanks for any advise from someone that knows these things. Also, are there any online parts views or manuals for this?

Re: 2000 Kawasaki 1100 STI water entry in hull

I have a 97 and 99 1100 stx that both had leaking issues.
You should refill the inside and take note where the water level is when it begins to leak. Is it leaking from the actual shaft seal or around the hole where the shaft exits the hull.

The green goop that is all over the inside of the hull tends to loose its bond.
On both of mine that were leaking from the shaft area required some effort.

This is how I proceeded:
1. Unbolt the box of electronics. (you do not have to disconnect everything, just enough to move it out of your way).
2. Remove the drive shaft, Requires removing the engine. You may as well buy a seal and bearing kit for the black bearing holder while you have it out.
3. I would then cut some of the fiberglass away above the shaft at its through hull point. Be sure to leave the bolt down sections for the electronics box.
4. From here you can pull the shaft mount and all the green goop out as one piece. Keeping it in one piece is why I would cut away some of the fiberglass. The access hole that is there is way to small.
5. I would then apply a generous amount of 3M 5200 to the hull and the bottom side of the green goop with the shaft section and place back down. You can feel with a little dry fitting how this piece should fit before you load it up with the sealant.
6. Then put it all back together. It is a good winter project. If you are at all handy it is not that difficult just takes a little time about 6-8 hrs. roundtrip.
