I have a carbed 2000 Johnson 150 HP on my 20' Proline CC. I bought the rig used in 2006. I run it in salt water for a total of about 50 hours every summer. Over the 6 years I've run it the motor has been problem free. At the end of every season I change the water pump impeller, change the lower unit oil , grease all of the fittings and fog the carbs and cylinders. I remove the prop, examine and grease and re-install. In the spring after I burn off the fogging oil I install new plugs. I have a water separating fuel filter I drain after each use and swap out the element when I swap the plugs. That is all I have ever done to the motor. I have never touched the oil system (other than to refill everytime I fuel up). My question is am I missing anything? Are there things I should be thinking about on a 12 year old unit that I should consider dpoing pro-actively to reduce the possibility of a breakdown? Any thoughts or advice very much appreciated.

I have the 20' DC, same hull. What I can think of is also the fuel filter at the motor, a decarb, and inspect your primer bulb and fuel line.
Also check your batteries and connections. Sounds like you are already doing more then most boat owners.:)

You have it pretty much covered. You are using an external filter, changing plugs once year doing the water pump and greasing everything. The only thing you haven't touched are the thermostats. There really is nothing else to do. I wouldn't touch the carbs or fuel pump unless they were giving you trouble and the rest of the engine is maintenance free unless it breaks.

Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not missing anything. I replaced the fuel line and primer bulb last season and cleaned all of the electricals at the stern this spring when I swapped out the float switch on the bilge pump. Good thought on the t-stats. I'm running right at 140 degrees so I think the're good but it's short money so I'll pick up a few. Looking forward to some time on the water!

Do you have the System Check Tachometer? if not I recommend it as the visual signals complement the audio signals. You might test the warning horn, and the alarm wiring, occasionally. Grounding the alarm wiring should trigger the alarm. Some alarms require the engine to be running.

Do you carry a gal (depending on size of fuel tank)of 2 cycle oil with you in case the OMS quits in the middle of a fish trip? You can premix on the spot and continue your trip.

well hidef - you were a prophet - something broke. I broke a piston over the weekend. Pretty much destroyed the right cylinder bank. Oil system checks out it does not appear to be a lubrication issue. I am not a happy camper. Thanks to Pete from Sea Tow Provincetown for the ride in. Am looking for used replacement power but it looks like a summer on the beach for me this year. :-(

iBoats probably sells remanufacturered powerheads for that motor.
