just purchased used boat, runs & idles great in the driveway. When on the water it cold starts excellent but after engine is warm, stop to fish anywhere from 30 min to 4 hrs, engine starts and runs 10 seconds then cuts off. After many restart attempts it will start & run fine. Was put in the shop & everything checked out fine, was advised go fishing...still having problems. I see that others have had similar problem but no solution has been posted.

Welcome Twoodson!

After stopping and fishing, have you tried to reprime the fuel system with the primer bulb? Need info here on how you get it to restart.

Welcome to the forum!

Thats an interesting coment you made at the end of your post.

The correct answer to nearly all problems are given. The part we dont know is, Is which answer was the correct one.

Once people get their motor running just peachy again they almost never post back and tell folks that tried to help what really did fix their problem.

Iam not saying its all just a guessing game, It most certinaly is not.

But their can be a number of things that will cause the same symptons. Its just a process of elemination.

With you engine in its very simplest terms is either fuel or fire. Or a combination of both.

Now its nothing but a process of elemination as to which one it is.

My first guess is that while you are stoped fishihg the carbs are leaking a bit at the needle and seat. their by flooding the engine.

Then it takes a few attemps to start and burn off the excess fuel load.

One way to check this is when you stop next time to do a bit of fishing.

Unplug the gas line from the engine, and reattach when you get ready to move out. If problem goes away you know your answer.

Repair the carbs. Their are other senerio,s that can cause the same symptons.

When you find the answer to your problem, Then it would be good to post back as to what the answer was. So the next fellar can see what fixed it.

A great many people do post back as to what the answer was, But just as many dont also.

Good Luck!

Thank you for your reply, here I go:
Shop checked: Fuel system, fuel restrictions - none found. Fuel pick up in tank ok. replaced primer bulb & connecting fuel line to engine. Checked engine temp, 140 degrees ok. fuel pump ok. shop mentioned that during hot weather with warm engine setting can cause fuel to boil in carb & cause hard start up.
How I would start after setting on water is turn engine over after cut off, i would have passenger prime the bulb while trying to start engine. After a few attempts, engine would start. Once I had to have passenger advance timing while trying to start by moving the timing lever. Engine seemed to run in idle better.
The motor is in excellent shape with not many hours. Could this be an electronic/sensor problem.
I have read shop manual but looking for somewhere to start further testing.

You need to check the ignition system after a hot soak. The OMC tool for checking the timing sensor , only does a static test. You need a scope to realy check the sensor, cheaper just to replace the sensor. Coils on this engine almost always arc to groung thru the back side, coil insulation is poor. Vapor seperator should be removed cleaned, float checked, diaphram replace in vapor pump. I will be in Newport News Labor Day for a week, should I bring my tools?

What grade fuel are you using?

Which spark plugs?

Re: 2000 Johnson 150 Ocean Pro won't idle after restart

Welcome Twoodson.
If you haven't already done so you should read my post "150 Johnson dies from warm start" Many people with these motors (late model 150/175's) report very similar problems, i.e. they start and run from cold just fine but run them and then sit a while and they are hard to get going again. Once going they run just fine.

With my motor, I give the primer bulb a good pump and then when the motor starts I give it a bit of a rev in neutral to get it going and then I can take off OK. Seems to work for me and others I've talked to. If I don't do this, it either stalls at idle or bogs down & stalls when I put it in gear.

There are various theories as to what causes this problem. I'm not sure we have really nailed it down to one thing but there may be a combination of contributing factors. Check out my post for a list of things to check. Clanton's vapor separator suggestion also sounds good to me as it could well be related to a fuel vaporisation problem.

Let us know how you get on.

Hello twoodson,
I had the same problem: try a new powerbox.
I'm not 100% sore, but you can try!
Haye from Holland

Thanks for all the input. I contacted Johnson and service rep said to check timing lync & sync. Talked to a local marine mech & he said to advance the low side of the timing a couple notches to get 900 rpms at idle in test tank. should be 650 - 700 rpms in gear. Works fine in test tank now, will put it in the water soon & will advise outcome.
