I wired a 2000 cherokee sport, used the wiring harness from the dealer parts counter, worked great for 3 years (traded it in at 3 years). I would imagine the grands are similar.

DougV>

solidwaste, at a recent "vehicle fire seminar" I attended, it was stated to us that U-Haul, when installing their hitches on Grand Cherokees, is putting a fuse on the wrong side of something. And causing the wiring to melt, and they have started some fires, all minor so far. What does this have to do with you? Well, maybe nothing, but I wanted to advise you, just in case, don;t ask for U0Haul's help. And don't copy their wiring, in case that was an option.

The first thing you have to determine is whether the brake lite and turn signal use the same bulb, or if they are separate bulbs. If they are separate bulbs, you need to by a converter. There is no way to make the lights on your vehicle work with the four wire system on your trailer. If a single bulb is used for both brake and turn signal you don't need the converter. Head to your local auto store or home store that sells auto parts and buy the plug-in harness. You unplug the chassis harness at the back of the vehicle, insert the trailer harness and your done. Quick, simple, and water proof.

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee and did the same thing with a aftermarket hitch. I also bought a converter from the dealer that sold me the hitch, it just plugs in the wireing harness behind the inside left quarter panel.

I did the same with my 1998 Grand. Just use the dealer stuff, it is all plug n play with no worries!
