Just some side notes it doesn't seem to matter if I am running for long periods or cold it does it at random times. I could be running good for half hour then a couple of backfire's ??

Try some seafoam, could be water in the fuel. When was your last tune up timing off a little?

Ok heres a link; After you try this post the results.

Timing chain have known to stretch. Dist. have known to get worn.

Have you cleaned out the fuel filters in the fitting at the carb, fuel pump, and fuel pickup. Check anti-syphon valve, vent to tank.

Usually an occasional backfire will indicate a lean condition, check out your carburetor, did you check, or replace the in-carb filter, behind the large nut?

Re: 2000 GM v6 Volvo Penta Backfire Problems

Backfiring is the result of improper ignition timing, a poor fuel mixture, or a combination of the two. I would start by checking timing and dwell (full RPM range) and then check for a lean fuel/air mixture.

You didn't say, what carb is on the engine?

IMO Backfiring through the carb can be caused by retarded ignition timing as well, but it isn't usually sporadic, it's repeated. Point gap or improper dwell due to wear, and neglect, can cause this. A lean condition would cause sporadic backfiring, as was mentioned.

So I checked the filter behind the Large nut and does not seem dirty but I will change just to be on the safe side. It is a Holly 2 barrel carb.
