This is my first post on this forum. I have read all the postings I could find on the newer 4-stroke Evinrudes. I need help on the following:
I have a 2000 Evinrude 15hp 4 stroke for the esteemed "kicker" replacement for a dead Volvo Mb10a. A used motor, label says: "Engine family Y: Y1PXM0019221"
It is a remote model and seems well built. Runs nice and idles smooth. I have yet to fit it on my boat, a 29 foot 7800lb sailboat.
-The engine does not have the same specs as the Suzuki 15hp or any other 15hp 4 stroke. Who makes it? (tag says 18.6 cu.in., Suzuki is 18.4 cu.in.)
-Where is there a manual for it?
-I saw one post state there are (supposedly) rocker arm problems with this motor. Is that substantiated? Are there really any potential gotchas with this motor?
-What kind of prop - other than stock would be best for pushing my sailboat - (a 7800lb Irwin 29)? Or would the stock prop be just fine?
-Where in the heck do I get parts for this beast?
I would appreciate anyone who could help solve the mysteries with this engine. I thought I really had a good deal purchasing this engine - and it still looks and runs great. I am now hesitant to put it on my boat, especially for depending on it alone to make a long - up river - journey.
Thanks again.

On that late of model probably at any johnson evinrude dealer.Don't know about prop pitch .manual will direct you as to optimal rpms at WOT for prop application. It will probably be around 13" pitch.

You asked what kind of prop. There is a hight thrust low pitch prop for sailboats. I think there is one for your Evin 15HP fourstroke too.

Try your local dealer. Tell them you have a 7800lb sailboat.

look for a prop with wide blades with a litle pitch.. they will push your boat just fine. if you stay with the origonal prop, you might get your boat to semi plane. so if I were you try it ith the origonal prop, if you get to the highest rpm and when you release the throttle (let it down a bit) you go the same speed, your boat is pure displace ment, and the different prop will help becuase you will have more pushing power, for waves and current :) if I were you, stickwith the origonal :)

Thanks for the prop info. I will see how well the stock unit works for it.
Do you guys know who makes this motor? Is it still made?
For me, there is no local dealer. I live in the sticks and usually have to order everything in.
So far there is no manual I can find for it. Know where one is?

Howdy, Sail Away.

You have one of the OMC built 4 strokes. I didn't think they were made as late as 2000, but your 18.6cid matches my 1996 Johnson 9.9. A lot of people never heard of the OMC-made 4 strokes.

My 1994 Johnson/Evinrude Service Manual for 9.9 and 15hp 4 strokes lists Evinrude 9.9 and 15hp models. It says that OMC dealers have a variety of props for the engine and can recommend the correct prop for your application.

My Johnny is a wonderful engine. Starts easy, idles quietly and operates smoothly. I think you will be very happy with your 15.

Good luck. :)

Cool BEANS! So the lil' beastie has a "standard" lower end (I can find props for it) and the power head is (probably) reliable. I have heard some guy saying that in the smaller sailboat arena that lots of guys have the covers off these things working on them. Maybe they were the older 2-strokes. (hehehe - just kidding) I have an older 1982 Evinrude Yachtwin 9.9 and it is a good ol' beast. I also have a Honda 8hp and it (likewise) is a good motor - I have racked a bunch of miles pushing a 26 ft. sailboat down the Arkansas river (from Oklahoma to the Mississippi River is 450 miles) with the Honda.
Where do I get the shop manual for the Johnny-rude 4-stroke 15? You say yours is a 1994 Johnny 4 stroke?

Re: 2000 Evinrude 15 HP four stroke mystery

Ok guys, did some checking. Thanks very much for the contact information.
Here is the scoop for all who care:
Until year 2002, the four stroke 9.9 and 15 HP Evinrude and Johnson motors were made by OMC. In 2002, they were made by Suzuki.
Owner's, Service and Parts manuals can be ordered by the following parts numbers -
-Owner's - 214725
-Service - 787060
-Parts - 5001001
Any major repairs will be with "remanufactured" units, ie. powerhead.
The OMC office (where I got the part numbers) said it has had "good luck" with the engine, and that it has been reliable.
