As I've mentioned in other threads recently, we're on the hunt for a new boat & we've been looking at a couple Cobalts in the early 2000's era. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Cobalt boats after ~1998 were 100% wood-free, but I don't know if I'm remembering correctly. The new boats on Cobalt's site appear to be wood-free, but does anyone know if early 2000 Cobalts were wood-free too? Specifically we're looking at a couple Cobalt 232 & 246 boats from 2000-2001.

While I can't say with certainty, you can contact Cobalt directly and they will be happy to help you. They have an excellent reputation for customer service and would give you the definitive answer on the materials used.

They also have all of their brochures downloadable. IF I remember correctly from when I last looked, I THINK they started using composite stringers as early as the mid eighties, and started doing transoms and decks in the mid-late 90's.

From Cobalts' website:

All of our structural construction goes through the Hydrolam Lamination Process. This is our way of building boats that get rid of the extra weight and inevitable rotting that comes with wood construction. We remove all the wood that would normally be used to build the structure (stringer systems) of our boats and instead use this time tested multi-faceted approach to boat construction which make?s a Cobalt last a life time. Hydrolam is a 8 layer process adding each fiberglass layer at the appropriate curing time. Hydrolam is exclusive to Cobalt, and variations of this process have been utilized in the Cobalt construction process for over 40 years.Hydro-lam involves fiberglass stringer systems, composite transoms, and the overlapping fiberglass lamination that is exclusive to Cobalt. Other manufacturers use less expensive building materials, such as wood, that are built one piece at a time and bolted or glued together, creating weak spots in the boat?s structure and strength. This same philosophy goes into the floor construction with our Nida-Core technology. Think of it as a synthetic honeycomb that has an incredible strength to weight ratio with superior strength over ply wood or balsa wood flooring. Efficient weight reduction pays substantial dividends with improved fuel efficiency. Not only are you getting more out of a tank of gas, you are also getting a product that will last longer than wood built boats.
