2000 90hp Johnson won't idle

Model J90VLSSS . Can not get it to idle . Using primer can manage after a couple of times to get it running at WOT runs good at this point but when slowed down it dies . Here is what I'v did so far . I can get it to halfway idle using primer then throwing in gear and taking off .
1. Took all carburetors off and made sure they were clean .
2. Changed in line filter and cleaned filter at fuel pump.
3. Checked compression . 100 PSI (if loaner from Auto Zone was right)all cylinders.
4. Spark checked good jumped about 7/16 of an inch.
5. Took idling jets out and checked they were clear .
6. Fuel pump is pumping ,did the pump bulb thing .
I don't give up easy but I do give out , Can someone give me some direction ?

I had a broken spring under the flywheel housing that caused similar symptoms in my 1999 90 hp Johnson. Sorry, I don't know the technical names for all of the parts. But this spring was attached to a plastic lever that controlled idle speed. When it broke, my boat would idle rough and die. It would run WOT fine, however. Hopefully one of the real mechanics will chime in with the correct names for the parts I referenced. The spring was easy to find when I removed the plastic flywheel cover. Wish I could offer more.

Well, Maybe it is time to check the idle timing. Maybe it somehow slipped and retarded.

Don't see a spring under flywheel cover but do see one under sensor cover which is first cover that can be removed by taking out 3 screws ,is this the one you are mean ? Or is it under next cover which is the flywheel cover ? Return spring under sensor cover is not broken .


How is idle timing checked?

There should be a thread by Joe Reeves with a procedure to check/set timing and synch. Look in the top secret files.

Made some changes on idle timing . It seems to be idling okay ,won't know until I put it in the water . Thanks for your input .
