Hi,
I have a 2000 Capri with a Merc 5.0 (305) 2Bbl carb. I just changed the oil/filter etc (the filter looked the same and fit perfectly, but was a bit taller. Should that matter?). It started in the driveway and ideld on muffs for a few minutes. I launched it and it started stalling.
It starts normally (with a pump of the throttle, then back to neutral), you can see gas pump from the jets and it starts fine. At idle, in gear it will run for about 45 seconds then stall. the higher the rpm the quicker it stalls. It does not look like gas is pumping after it starts.
The oil pressure is good (says 40 psi on the gauge at idle). I checked teh connections on the oil pressure relay and they seem ok.
My neighbour looked and called his friend who is a mechanic and has the same engine. he said it could be the fuel pump relay.
Looking for advice, should I/how do I test the oil pressure relay? Can I test the fuel pump relay or the pump itself?
Friends came from out of town and I am pulling my hair out trying to take them on the boat! HELP!
Thanks,
Steve.
