Hello all! I need some advice please.

I bought a fixer upper 2000 5.0 2 bbl carbureted boat. The previous owner jack legged a universal fuel pump and the engine starves for fuel. I ordered and just received an OEM electric pump. I also found the purple/yellow wire was not connected to the starter and also noticed the solenoid is incorrect because it does not have enough terminals. I ordered a marine starter but havent received it yet. Here are my questions:
.
1 Is it ok to temporarily hook the purple/yellow wire to the same terminal as the red/yellow for testing purposes?
2. Where is the fuel pump usually mounted? Close to the tank or on the engine somewhere? A pic would be really helpful if anyone has one .
3. I cannot find fittings to screw in the pump to hook the fuel lines to.(fuel pump part # 861155A) Any idea on this? Especially the one thats on the carburetor side of the fuel pump.
4. Is the fuel line the same size (3/8?) from the tank to the carburetor? I really want to put all this back together the way it came from the factory.

Thanks everyone!

Hi, the fuel line from the tank should go to the water separating fuel filter base/assembly as seen as item number 12 in the following link,
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/s.../31837/2697/70

The fuel pump is mounted to the front of the engine block to the left of the circulation water pump as you face the front of the engine. Item # 1, 3 and 7 are used to hold the pump in place. The fittings you need to find/buy are 4, 5, 8, 9 and maybe 6 and 10.

The fuel pump will receive 12 volts of power once the oil pressures reaches 4 PSI of oil so the pump will/should power up pretty quickly. The wire at the starter just helps turn on the pump immediately until 4 psi is reached. Some have left the wire disconnected though not really recommended as it delays starting/turning on the fuel pump.

Your engine serial number is ? This should be your parts catalog but a serial number will help confirm it, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/5-0l-...-1998-2001-0l0

Yes the yellow/red wire only has power during cranking. So it will do the same thing as the terminal in the starter solenoid.

Its's OK to run it in the yard on a hose to test. But be careful to eliminate any gas fumes by running the blower before cranking, leaving the bilge plug out, and working outdoors with the engine hatch open.
Don't use the boat until you have that marine starter and fuel pump. The non marine ones aren't electrically sparkproof.

BTW if you can't find any purple with yellow wire as I couldn't, you can buy the right marine tinned purple wire and put yellow shrink wrap stripes on manually.

You can temporarily put the purple/yellow on with the the the yellow/red wire at the starter.

The reason for that wire is so the fuel pump will work during cranking. If you just want to test the motor before you have the marine starter you can manually prime your carb with carburetor cleaner spay or gasoline. Just a little fuel though. 1/4 or 1/2 ounce will probably light off fine.

You guys have been soooooo helpful!!

If the purple yellow wire is left off the solenoid, what happens when the oil pressure sensor turns on the power to the fuel pump? Does it also send power back to that purple yellow wire left loose?

Looks like I will have to fabricate that $60 fuel line! LOL Cant see paying that much for a little steel line. And here I was thinking this engine had rubber fuel lines(thats whats on it now) and I should have known they wouldnt be rubber.

Do any of you know the answer to this question:

Being it's a two wire system/switch yes it seems to indicate that the power will travel both ways/back to the small starter terminal once the switch is activated but I can't really say for certain as I can't recall ever actually testing it. It would be a good idea to test the wire for power before connecting it to the yellow start wire as it could strip out the starter gears.
