Good afternoon,
First time posting here, I am new to the whole outboard boat world. I have a 2000 35 hp. Johnson 3 cylinder outboard that I purchased on a boat. When I first took it out for a test ride, I got an honest 25 mph out of the engine at full throttle. We shot around for about 20 minutes on the boat with no problems. The motor was converted by the previous owner to a premix.
Fast forward to last week, other than changing the plugs (and gapping them at .030 as the original manual states) and putting in a new water pump, it is as it was when I bought it. I took the boat out on a lake and after running it about ten minutes, the RPM's and speed dropped to about half speed, then jumped up an down for a bit, finally ending up with only being able to run the boat just in gear, without any throttle because it would die out. I did notice the smell of raw gas when I was having issues. I talked to the previous owner and asked him about the power pack symptoms he had and explained to him what happened to me. He said that he would look at the "other" fuel pump on the boat as it sounded like it was gas starved. He said that he replaced the one pump (which I look at as the Port side pump) for $26 on ebay (aftermarket). I looked at it and confirmed that he did replace the port side, which is apparently the more expensive pump. That being said, I could only find an inexpensive starboard side pump on ebay and not a port side pump. The two original part numbers for these pumps are 438559(starboard) and 438557(port).
I have a couple of questions; does it really matter between a "port side" pump and "starboard" side pump, as it seems both are starboard on there now and it was running fine with this setup, and 2.; do these symptoms sound like anything else?
Thanks in advance for your help with this issue.
