My Ficht broke a piston ring.. port side top cylinder. Got it apart... looks like too many years of trolling and no decarb seized a piston ring.. I'm having it machined out to 3.874 for 20 over pistons. Can anybody recommend a source for a rebuild kit? I see some on ebay.. pistons, bearings, all gaskets etc but who knows where it's made. Probably China unfortunately . But I wondering has there been any firmware updates for this motor since 2000?? A very good evinrude mechanic I know said he recalled they figured out they needed to turn down the oil usage via the EMM. I do use the XD-100, and from now on twice a season I'll be pulling the plugs and letting some sea foam sit in the bores overnight. Thoughts? thanks

I will play Devils advocate and question sticking any money into that motor. It is obsolete and has been for quite a while. Your money would be better spent elsewhere like a different motor I would make sure your injectors are all good if you are hell bent on fixing that motor look for a WSM kit if they make one. Use BRP engine tune or Quicksilver powertune for carbon removal. Once again I urge you not to stick a dime into that motor.

as a matter of fact WSM is the manufacturer of the kit on eBay I see. Thanks for the info... yes if money were no object I'd buy a used eTech. Because I can do all the work but the machining myself it's seems like the most viable option for me at this point. I'll have 2k in it and basically a new motor. When I first bought it 6 years ago I hooked it up to the laptop software and it showed out of 1000 hrs about 900 was all at idle.. aka trolling. I probably put another 500 doing the same. I don't think the engine failure was so much a design flaw [ as the earlier models were ] but simply a matter of lots of soot and no de-carbing.

STOP!!!!!! The 2000 model 200HP is a 3.685 bore(3L) and the 3.854 bore is a 3.3L!!!!! Unless the powerhead has been swapped stop all machining and parts ordering!!! Put a impeller in it every year not matter how it pees. What usually happens is ring locator pin come out and lets ring roll in exhaust port. This is a cooling issue not carbon. DO NOT BORE over .020 as no way to richen up cylinders. If it has to go over .020 resleeve it.

well mine is a later 2000 3.3 so it has the 3.854 bore but thanks for pointing that out! That makes sense about the piston locator pin... hadn't thought of that. You say it's a known cooling problem?? The water pump is only 1 year old and it's been in cool clean lake Huron. It pisses a decent stream but not like I would have suspected. I'm kind of wondering if I didn't get a good seal when the pipe from the lower goes up into the motor... the pump came with parts for different models there was a bit of confusion on my part which rubber bushing I was suppose to use. I am definitely going to check it out sure don't want to have the same issue twice!! Where did you hear this was a common cooling problem with this engine I hadn't heard that before? Thanks
