Installed new stator today and of course I have problems. After installing and attempting to start engine fires up for a second and then will not start and labors while cranking (like engine is tight or jumped time). If I kill the ignition the engine turns freely, I am thinking that I screwed up the timing or trigger when I removed stator. I did not change any of the trigger connections or linkages, if throttle is advanced trigger turns freely. This engine would run with the old stator until engine became warm then it would die until engine is cooled down. This engine is a 2000 EFI 175 HP Merc, does not have switch boxes. Wires from stator run directly to the coils (coils are CDM). Any special procedures while installing stators? Anything in particular to look for?

The stator just makes electricity. Sounds like you didn't get the trigger assembly back in there correctly. That's the only thing I can think of that would cause it to act as you say. Your timing is too advanced. I'm going by memory here, but I think the lever should pull the trigger as it advances. I'm betting the link is in front of the lever and it's pushing it instead.

How did you get the flywheel off? If you pulled the small bolts instead of the big one you may have gotten it turned a few bolt holes. This will mess timing up.

Puuled with Merc Flywheel puller. Just call me stupid. I did not put the flywheel back in the same position as it was removed. All flywheels that I had done prior to this one were dummy proof with a woodruff key.

All mercs have a keyway in the flywheel, you'd better find that missing key before it breaks something!
