I have a 2000 150hp ocean pro. idles at 1200rpm on muffs.
This is way faster than it ever did before.
all carb butterflies closed tight.
perform link and sync.
checked timing OK
plugs good
rebuild on all 6 carbs
new throttle body o-rings (small nick and smashed spot on one of them)
thought I had found my smoking gun, but no.
Grounded black/white wire from pack to ground.
Does grounding black/white wire disable quick start, or do you have to do something else?
I think it may be quick start but can't seem to make a difference.
Please help. planning trip to shop but do not want to spend the money.

I don't remember if you ground or unground the Quickstart wire to turn it off. A service manual will help. If I get the chance I can look it up for you later.

OK, If you did the link and synch, did you use a service manual? If so, you can look up to see how to disable the Quickstart, as it is in there.

Have factory manual.
Mentions how to test using timng but not how to disable or bypass.

Ground the pack side of the white/black QS wire, and remove the yellow/red wire that leads to the pack from the starter solenoid terminal.

Thank you I will try that. Any other ideas??
If it is the quick start circuit what caused it to fail. What do I need to check?
I rebuilt all 6 carbs they were in nice shape, maybe sticky needle valves and bad hieght adjustment but thats it.
replaced spaghetti orings on throttle body found a nicked one(must have been that way from the factory)
Could it be a intake maifold gasket? seems to run pretty smooth just fast.

What does this mean...the bolded, underlined part? What was the value, not just OK.
The reason I ask is for two reasons...one is that the idle speed is adjusted by changing the timing at idle. Two is that QuickStart works by electronically advancing the timing when cold in order to provide a faster idle. So, if your idle timing is correct per the factory spec, and it still idles too high, it cannot be QS causing the speed increase. If QS was stuck ON, your idle timing would show slightly advanced. The problem would have to be air leak or carb related, possibly throttle butterflies not closing all the way (yes I saw that you checked this). Just an example.

IF I am incorrect, and this DOES NOT apply to the optical ignition systems, please disregard, and wait for an optical ignition expert to chime in.

And this is a carbed Johnson, correct?

Have OMC ignition analyzer. During link and sync set it to 6 degrees ATDC and 20 degrees for WOT
checked while running and it was OK but that was some time ago before this fast idle problem really became a problem.
I will now bypass quick start and double check timing.

this is an OIS with carbs J150VSXXX

Re: 2000 150HP OceanPro Idles too fast out of ideas.

Just finished checking. Fast start disabled per instructions above. (note had to disconnect Yellow/red wire while running engine. Engine would not start without wire hooked up.
Black/white wire on two pin connector from power pack grounded to case.

Timing at 6 degrees ATDC running at 1200 to 1400 rpm with a stumble (cough)
Every 5 or 10 seconds or so.

If there is a leak it must be at the intake manifold gasket I guess. To my knowledge this has never been disturbed since the factory. Only went as far as carbs and throttle body. Dripped oil arourd gas intake tubes and intake manifold. No difference in RPM. Could it be a coil causing the stumble or is this an air leak also.
Any help would be great. Out of ideas.

Re: 2000 150HP OceanPro Idles too fast out of ideas.

Don't know your harness, but there is a feed from the yellow/red to the powerpack. Usually at the solenoid. You disconnected the harness side (to key switch). Therefore no starter motor... What you are looking for is the yellow/red to the pack. However, no matter.

Spec says 6* ATDC at 700-750 or so? So it is having to idle at 1200 just to show 6*?

Are you absolutely sure about the throttle butterflies AND the timing linkages free and easy to rotate, and return to the idle position without binding? That whole mechanism is kinda scary the way it works. Regardless, that timing ring HAS to rotate mechanically and has to be free to do so. Any chance the optical sensor and the related timing wheel with those notches is bad? Timing wheel with a few broken notches?

Black/white wire on two pin connector from power pack grounded to case.

.

Not sure about this statement. You say black/white....it is usually a white wire with a black tracer. It originates in one of the temp sensors, so there will be a tan wire AND the white/black coming out of one temp sensor. Not sure which head it is on your motor.

You have to ground the pack side of that wire.
