could you guy's tell me how reliable the johnson's j150vxsss are?? when I bought the boat the records showed that the lower unit was rebuilt, was there a problem with them or could of the other owners hit something. the records I got with the boat dont say why it was rebuilt.. I know its after the fact because I bought the boat but would like to know just how they hold up doing the right maintenance???

I have a '98 Johnny 150HPV6. Everything works fine, with nothing other that ordinary maintenance. Make sure to change the gearoil at least once/year, usually in the fall. Check it for water intrusion.

The PO could have hit something or just shifted back and forth recklessly, ruining the gears, no way to tell. Also, when shifting into or out of gear, be decisive so the shift dog doesn't grind..

BTW - There are brand new replacement gearcases for that motor from SEI for < $700. if I ever needed a rebuild, I would just buy a new one from SEI or a used one from a salvage yard.

Angler,
Like Chris above I also have a Johnson 150hp OceanRunner. The last trip out in Nov. I noticed an excessive grinding noise while shifting into reverse and also while running in reverse when docking or unloading, but no problems in forward gear. Just drained the lower unit and the fluid is very dark but no water and no major metal grindings, just some small filings on the upper and lower drain plugs. My next step will be to try a shift linkage adjustment and go from there. But, overall 13 years on a lower unit in saltwater sounds about normal.

The exact same lower unit is used on many models, they're very reliable.

also slamming it from forward to reverse real fast can destroy the clutch dog and gear slots, it only takes once. but over all if you take care of them they are good.
