I stole (not literally) a boat that has a 2000 125 Mercury 2 stroke Saltwater with the oil reservoir.

How do check for proper operation?

I know I should fill up the reservoir and run it to see if the engine uses it, but I hate to test an oil
supply system by running it with the possibility of the engine not getting any oil.

If if the engine doesn’t take oil
from the reservoir what’s involved in troubleshooting and repair?

Thanks Everyone

Mix oil / gas at 50:1 n a portable tank.----Disconnect oil pump output line.---Start motor and measure oil pump output at fast idle.----Exact number of cc's would be in a manual.----It would be around 19 cc for 10 minutes I think..-----Somebody here would have the exact number.

That’s an awesome and logical answer.

Thank you!

and if nothing or low flow, just replace oil pump?
Or is it bigger than that?

Not sure if those were still driven by a plastic gear or not ?-----But if there was no oil I would first determine why that is !!----A new oil pump is a bit more than $24.95 on those motors.

I have only seen one of those gears fail on this style of motor...and it wasn't gears fault.
