I have an opportunity to buy a 2000 190DC Sea Pro with a 2000 Evinrude 115hp engine with low (50) hours. In view of all the problems that Evinrude had with the Ficth motors, is this a good choice?

My other choice is a 1991 190CC Sea Pro with a 1995 Yamaha 130hp motor. Both of these are saltwater motors and I always thought that saltwater outboards had an average life of 10 years.

I didn't mention that the 1991 Sea Pro is half the price of the 2000 model ($6500 vs $12,000). Anybody have experience with either of these motors or boats to help the decision process?

Re: 2000 115hp Ficht OMC

Welcome to iboats. I have a 2000 150hp Ficht and it is a great motor, you should check to see if the Ficht is still under warranty. Most of the Ficht problems were in the early years and were pretty much over with by 2000, and even so the biggest problems were with the 150 and 175hp 60 degree engines. Your comparing a 5 year old motor to a 10 year old motor, that's just twice as long of a time for the Yami to have been beat on and not taken care of. If price wasn't a factor I would go with the Ficht, but that's your call. As for the saltwater motor thing, I'm not really sure what,if any, the difference really is on a so called saltwater motor, but I only run in saltwater and have plenty of engines that last way longer than 10 years, I don't even consider that old, I have a 1975 70hp Johnson right now that is perfect and never been run in anything but saltwater, you just have to take care of them, flush them every time and wash them down, they'll be alright.

Cricket Too

Thanks for the words of encouragement on the Ficht. Glad to hear that most of the problems occured before 2000. Also glad to hear about your longer term experience with saltwater motors. That gives me confidence that the motor should have a lot of years left. What is your feeling about the low run time (50 hrs) in five years? Should one be adding something to the gas to keep the injectors from fouling? I read that a plugged injectors can cause that cylinder to fry. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks for your inputs.

Ed
