I have a 1991 200 H.P. Mercury 2.4 Litre. It is getting hot at 3,500 rpm's. It was rebuilt about 2 months ago. The divider plate gasket was blown. replaced that and it still is getting hot. It is like the exhaust is getting into the water jacket. There is a lot of water pressure at idle on the gauge 35psi. This motor had a sleeve put in on #3 cylinder also. Any help will be appreciated.
thanks
Rodney

Re: 200 Mercury getting hot

Is this recently been happening or has it always got hot at higher RPM's? Also, I have never seen water pressure that high. Is your guage accurate? 10 lbs at idle is common, with it going up as high as 20 lbs at higher RPM's.

Take a look at the poppet valve, could be stuck and not dumping excess water through the exhaust.

This problem has just started happening. The hot horn is sounding. The poppet valve appears to be okay.
thanks
Rodney

I have taken the poppet valve out and it keeps the hot horn from sounding. Any ideas?
thanks

Re: 200 Mercury getting hot

I have a 1997 200 (2.5L) and have had this problem (in fact having it again now.) It was the poppet valve. I took the poppet apart and cleaned everything and still had the problem. After going through everthing (impellor, thermostates, engine height) I went back and replaced the poppet valve. That did it. It happing again probably because I run in salt water and don't always flush.

Replace the entire poppet assembly... Everything....
Poppet, carrier, grommet, spring, diaphram, washer, gaskets... And clean the metal parts and hole as well as you can before reassembly...
