200 Merc Timing Issue

Have 2001 200 Merc Carb. Having problems wont accerator
over 1100 rpm under load. Checking timing went through as
per Merc manual setting cranking at 24 BTDC and WOT at 18 BTDC
After I ran and adjusted idle speed I assume my timing should be around
9 ATDC . It reads 18 BTDC? Am I assuming wrong ? Manual doesnt make
clear how to adjust idle timing in any other way . Maybe stator problems ?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Re: 200 Merc Timing Issue

Idle timing doesnt matter. You just set the timing at idle so you have 700 or so RPM at idle in the water in gear. You get what you get if everything is working right.

WOT timing is set with the idle speed regulator disconnected if you even have one on a 2001.

If you have everything setup correctly....sounds like the high side of the stator is gone...Merc' love switch boxes and stators.....

Just to be clear.--------Idle timing is the point where the throttle plates open up.------So that would be a carburetor / linkage adjustment.-----The timing on a motor like that rarely goes out of adjustment on its own.

Thanks for all the input. Not really clear on why mercury calls out idle timing 9 degrees atdc and it
Will never get close to that? At what point is it ever get there?
Thanks

No idea. That whole Mercury timing setup deal is so convoluted it makes no sense. I don't use it. There are much better ways to set the timing.

Gonna disagree here. Idle timing is set with throttle plates completely closed and throttle at rest against tha stop. It has nothing to do with throttle or butterflies. You do not adjust idle speed or timing with tha anything except tha idle timing screw. As soon as tha throttle moves in tha very least it starts advance. It gets outta sync when someone does a link n sync on 'em and tries ta set it "by tha book". Tha book is a generalization or starting point for idle timing. It really needs ta be in tha water and in gear to get it where tha motor AND tha owner are both happy..................

Idle timing is where throttle plates open up.

Re: 200 Merc Timing Issue

That is the throttle pickup adjustment. Idle timing is just that. Its the ignition timing at idle which is not something that can correctly be set without the motor in the water.

Idle timing is where throttle plates open up.

Believe whatcha want but "idle timing" is set with "em completely closed. Ya don't move tha butterflies at all ta set tha idle timing. Thus tha reason for an idle circuit in tha carbs. Timing determines tha idle speed. Once tha throttle is moved at all tha idle circuit is dropped out and timing starts advancing....jmo

Re: 200 Merc Timing Issue

Yes thanks I understand about throttle plates being closed . When the manual says max timing are they referring to the max timing adjustment screw and to crank motor with throttle closed and adjust timing to 24 btdc and then primary pick up timing is done the same way but only using
Primary pick up screw. ? Then final adjustment done in gear in water adjust primary pick up screw to be 700 rpm ? The reason behind all this is motor will not go above 1100 rpm under load, still can't figure out where the 9 degree idle timing comes in?
Thanks

Re: 200 Merc Timing Issue

Wish I could be more help but I'll be tha first ta admit I know "squat" 'bout tha 'lectronic motors unless I can plug 'em to a dva, ddt or 4 button tester. Tha only ones I've dealt with tha ecm was bad causin' same thing as yours.........Don't mean that's your problem though.

Strange but I've never seen those timing numbers for primary and wot in a Merc/Mariner manual.........

Re: 200 Merc Timing Issue

Outboard motors are easy to troubleshoot.-----------Step # 1 is a compression test, what are the values ?---------Step #2 is to check the ignition output.-Each plug lead must show spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" or more.--------Believe it or not the timing rarely goes out of adjustment , unless owners start doing things to it !------If those tests are good then you start looking at fuel and induction issues.
