Just waiting on the end of the month for the warranty repair on a suspected power pack. #3 cylinder no spark. New coil, new wires, new plug..no juice. Plug look brand spanking new while the others look normal. Most of the "pros" here (and that is certainly how I look at the likes of clanton,12footer and others) say the power pack is suspect. My question is..is there a possibility of a loose wire that I can check out? The PP is located on top if the back of the moter and it looks quite easy to access...are there 6 wires that run to each indiv coil? Is it possible that I just have a loose wire. I was cruising at 5800 rpms and dropped a thousand rpms.....no juice to #3 since that day. If it is a wire..where would it be and what colors should I be looking for?? Thanks to the pros on here.....I for one appreciate each and every one of you!! Unlike someone else that didnt get a question answered and blamed the board...hummmm Im still trying to figure that one out...thanks guys....musch appreciation..any idea what the max RPMs should be on a 98 200 hp johnson with a 9x17 ( I think) prop????
GOD BLESS AMERICA

If you replaced coil with new one, power pack or timer sensor most likely problem. When you check timer you have to jumper pack or timer to shift timer from Quick Start to run sensor, see a service manual.

I replaced the coil to the effected cylinder..same problem. I moved the plug to a different cylinder plug worked fine in different cylinder. Put plug wires on different cylinders, all work fine but cyl #3. Continuity tested all wires..they check out. I dont want to get into the power pack because I have no idea what Ill find under there, I was just wondering if there is a wiring harness that supplies the coils with spark, and if anyone has ever heard of the harness loosening and causing a SINGLE cylinder to die. I know Im reaching here, but Im desperate to get out and fish...I know you all understand.....deep inside I know it isnt a loose wire but Id figured Id ask the experts here for an opinion....

finnaddict98@excite.com

Fin-
Hypothetically.......
If someone unbolted a 175 HP in 600 ft of water....And someone else unbolted a 200HP in the same depth of water.....Which one would hit the bottom first????????
:) :p :D ;)

Re: 200 Johnson-Power pack?

Fin, I had a similar prob this spring. Lost #1 cylinder on my '86 150 evinrude. Turned out to be a broken conductor inside the insulation between the timer base and the port power pack. Couldn't see the problem, had to wiggle the wire to make it conduct. I was able to diagnose by swapping power packs. Your engine is too new to start having worn out wiring. Like Clanton said it's probably the power pack or timer sensor. You gotta test the sensor before you can say the power pack is the problem.
