I just got back from a tow so no time to troubleshoot, heres what happened: the boat was struggling to get on plane, almost go on plane than the rpms shot up and it felt like the prop spun. motor than died and the starter could not turn over the engine. i removed all spark plugs and still could not turn over motor. battery showed good volts. engine did not overheat and oil supply seemed normal. could the lower unit have locked up?....thanks....joe

Could have - - One way to find out - - pull it. Then try to turn the flywheel by hand. It should turn easily. Also try to turn the drive shaft. It will be one or the other. Go from there.

Joe....drain the lower unit gear lube and look for metal particles and such that shouldn't be there. If you find them in abundance, like solittle said, pull the lower unit and see if the power head is free. If the power head is free, looks like the lower unit has gone south.

On the other hand....if ya' don't see nothin' bad in the oil, pull the spark plugs and put her in neutral. If the power head don't turn, just to be sure, pull the lower unit and try it again.

From what you posted, I'm willing to bet the lower unit is shot.

I just took off the lower unit and it is blown to smithereens! pure water came out of the fill holes. the boat is kept in the water so i do not check the oil as often as i should. If anyone knows where i can find a good used lower unit let me know....thanks...joe

Try this site or

www.boatpartsused.com

I bought a rebuilt powerhead from this company in Orlando Florida for a 96 225hp Ocean Pro and it seems to be of good quality.

Sorry to hear about the blow up. It could always be worse.

Good Luck!
