I just spent $1300.00 repairing the complete ignition system on my 1996 200 HP Johnson V6. Apparently the mounting system that holds the whole thing underneath the flywheel got loose and tore itself up.
Anyone have any idea why something like this would ever happen? Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening again. Can I remove the flywheel from time to time to see if things have gotten loose again, or does removing the flywheel screw up the engine timing. The motor now runs just fine. null

Hey PAC,
You might ask the wrench that did your repairs if he used locktite on the mounting screws. If he did, they shouldn't vibrate loose & you need not worry about removing the flywheel to inspect. :)
Backlash

Clanton/Backlash: Thanks for your reply. The screws were torqued and I was assured that Locktite was used.

Do you know if removing the flywheel to inspect things disturbs the ignition timing. I obviously don't have a manual but am thinking about getting one.

Ok to remove flywheel for inspection. Look at the magnets while you have it off.

Does anyone know how much to torque the head bolts on a 1996 200HP Johnson OceanPro? It's probably never been done. I've got the tightening sequence down but not the amount of torque.

Hey PAC,
I don't have the torque specs but let me offer my opinion. Unless you've removed the head or loosened the head bolts for some reason, there's no reason to torque the head bolts. You may be better off in just leaving well enough alone. :) :)
Backlash

Re: 200 hp Johnson Ignition

Thanks Backlash. I was just considering it since I just read the engine manual and it recommends re-torquing annually. However, if this doesn't correspond with convential wisdom and experience then I'll leave it alone.
I was also looking for #1 cylinder. Do you know if its at the top of the left bank looking at the front of the engine. It's a V6. Also, the timing adjustment appears to be a screw with a locknut under the left side of the flywheel. This sound right to you?
