I just purchased a used boat that has a 200 h.p. Mercury "Black Max" outboard on it. The guy told me the motor was bought new in 1992 but the serial number tag is missing half of the number (worn off). Does anyone have an idea of what year this motor might be or is there another location I can find a serial number or year of manufacture? Secondly, the motor is stamped with "oil injected" right below the brand name, but the guy I bought it from said to mix 2 cycle oil in the gas tank. There is no oil metering reservoir mounted on the engine, so what exactly does the oil injected term refer to? I want to make sure I'm not trashing the engine by not putting oil in some secret spot I don't know about.<br />Thanks for any ideas!!

The coloring of the decals gives a very good indication on the model year.<br /><br />As soon as you know the year, lots of info will be easier to tell.<br /><br />Try the search on these forums.

The serial number is also engraved on the transom bracket.

If he told you to mix the gas/oil and there isn't an internal tank, he has probably already removed it. On my '85 150 Black Max, I still run the oil injection and there is a small tank right above the carbs.<br /><br />My decals are brown. The '92 should be red I believe.

Re: 200 h.p. Mercury Black Max

Thanks for the great suggestions. I couldn't find the serial number stamped anywhere but I did get the number off of that worn serial number tag (maybe the last digit or two missing), that was 0A9938. The motor is black and the striping consists of 3 lines of black, silver, gray, with a thin red pin stripe running through the middle of the "mercury" name. I also noticed a date stamped on the power trim assembly that said May 11, 1986 but I don't know if that refers to the motor's age or the trim cylinder age. In regards to the pre-mix oil tank, I did find the location it used to be in and it has been removed. Now I'm curious why it was removed, did the oil injection fail a lot? So, if anyone has any more information on this motor I'd sure like to hear about it so I can buy the proper repair manuals for it.

I couldn't find a OA9938-- 200hp. Merc but I did find a A9938-- 200 hp.. It was a 1987 model.<br />The oil injectors (VRO) aren't bad about failing, but when they do, it's almost always fatal. I personally prefer premix.<br /><br />g'luck & c/6<br /><br />Hooty
