Greetings,
I just won this boat.
http://cgi.govliquidation.com/auction/view?id=900845
I'll be doing quite a bit of cleanup and restro. Im thinking they painted over the Gel Coat on this but I havent even looked at it. If so Im guessing light sanding and then anti-foul paint would be best? I have zero experience with boats. I like the idea of coating the inside of the boat with bedliner since you can get those in different colors now.
As far as the engines go, what is the generally accepted mean run time before overhaul? The one motor has about 600 hours and Im guessing this is close to end of life? Apparently these Johnson 70HP are year 2000 according to the serial number. Thanks in advance..

What in the world is that "Boston Whaler" that you "won"? Never seen one quite like that! Did the fed's pick this up in a drug bust?

The skinny- Made by Whaler's Commercial Products Division - True size 18'6' Military product with different mold and thicker glass, apparently internal 50+ gal fuel tank. I have 7 months to make it sea worthy. Order of preference 1. Safe 2. Reliable 3. Make it look civilian agian.. That, and now I don't have any money left... :p

Best of luck Bitwrench: Maybe you could post a few pictures as your restoration progresses.
It should be one solid boat.

Re: 20' Raider Model

The Raider 20 was made (thicker) for the military in the same outside hull mould as the Classic Outrage 18. The inside hull is, I think, different. It was made for the military, so many specs are bigger/tighter/tougher than the civilian boats.

Those OMC triples usually run an average of 1500 hours before major repair. Average means that around half go longer. They may be different (military) spec than the civilian version, which would mean last longer/break less often. I think OMC even made some that would run on kerosene.

By the way, serial numbers on OMC engines don't mean much. You need the model numbers to properly ID them. Those are 2000 models. My guess is that the boat is from the 80s.

I think you got a great deal, bitwrench. 8)
