I have a 20 pole force tach that I replaced for my 175 v6 johnson tach, I think the dealer made a mistake. It has "20 pole force" imprinted on the back and I only max out at 2200 rpm on this tach. When I asked the dealer if it was the correct one, he said I have to calibrate it. I am learning that I need a 12 pole, can anyone tell me what the difference is and what the poles mean?

I doubt that tach will work unless it has a selector switch on the back. That tach was made especially for certain Force motors.
Does the tach have a brand name and model number?

So you asked the dealer why it was not reading correctly, and he told you to calibrate it. Why didn't he do it for you, or atleast tell you how?

Some dealer. If he can't get it to work for you, return it. If he won't take it back, then smash it up and pour it into his hands in front of lots of customers. Then proceed to badmouth him to all your boating friends for the next ten years.

Ok, maybe a bit extreme, but I'd probably do it. :)

No, don't smash it! If he won't take it back, I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands. I'm needing a 20 pole tach myself.

Roscoe is right though. The one you have is made for Force motors, what you're needing is a 12 pole.

The perch are biting, so I may smash it over his head and pour it into his mouth, thanks for the advice.
