I have a 91, 20 hp evinrude I'm replacing the under fly wheel cdi with a kit from cdi electronics. so my question is do I really need the air gap ring tool for $60 or is there a shade tree way to set the gap or does it matter at all. if someone has the tool local I could barrow that would be great. anyway looking for a little info thanks

from a Seloc Manual...apply 3 layers of masking tape across the face of the flywheel magnets <.025"> mount the module lightly with the screws barely tight so the outer edge is even with the machined surface of the stator. Put the flywheel on and turn it clockwise, remove the f/w and inspect the tape. Adjust as necessary to achieve just the smallest amount of contact with the tape. When this is achieved, secure the mounting screws to prevent movement during operation. Slight paraphrasing on my part.

thanks for the info, and just for clarification masking tape is the same thing as painters tape right? and should I tork down the fly wheel or just set it on top firmly? thanks again for the info.

yes to the tape and no need to torque until final install on the f/w

How about useing a straight edge from the base of the timer base to the edge of the cdi unit and then tighten the screws ??
